About North Yorkshire Scouts
North Yorkshire Scouts provide Scouting in England's largest County and has a total membership of 7820, made up of 6417 youth members supported by 1403 adult volunteers. We welcome new members, young or old, to join us in our great adventure!
The Scout Association provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for young people aged 6-25.
Personal development means promoting the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of the individual, helping them achieve their full potential.
In Scouting, we believe that young people develop most when they are 'learning by doing,' when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.
With many activities on offer and half a million UK members, including 60,000 girls, Scouting offers everyday adventure to young people and adult volunteers.

Scouting in the UK
There are over 520,000 people involved in Scouting in the UK. What goes on at local level is what drives us, and we support all this activity with an extensive local and national volunteer structure, and a small number of paid staff.
We are continually reviewing and trying to improve the quality of the experience that we provide for young people, and this goes for everyone from local Scout leaders right up to national Headquarters.
We're keen for all our members to be up to speed with everything we're doing and planning, so each year we produce an annual report of all our recent activity, where we try to measure the effect that our work is having in communities across the UK.
Scouting in the UK is the largest mixed volunteer-led Movement for young people in the UK. Scouting exists to make young people’s lives better, helping them realise their full potential and take their place in society.

Scouts shake hands with their left hand. The tradition was started by Lord Robert Baden-Powell. When he was a soldier in Africa, BP saw lots of tribal chiefs who carried spears and shields. He noticed that it was a sign of great trust to offer your left hand when shaking hands. This was because you had to put down your shield and yet leave the other person holding a spear.

Scouts do not just wear green, they also think green too. To help Scouts out there is a even a badge for Global Conservation. |
Gilwell Park is the home of Scouting in the UK. Gilwell welcome visitors from all over the world to this historic site.
Of course, whether you’re involved in Scouting or not, Gilwell Park is open to all and even caters for weddings. The centre also hosts the annual Gillwell 24 which is a 24 hour long day of activities and challenges for the Explorers. |
Scouting is one of the great success stories of the last 100 years. From an experimental camp for 20 boys on Brownsea island in 1907, it has spread to 216 countries and territories, with an estimated 28 million members.
