What is Cub Scouting?
There are loads of fun things that you can do as a Cub Scout. You will get a chance to try lots of different activities like swimming, music, exploring, computing and collecting. If you do them properly you will get a badge which you can wear on your uniform.
Cub Scouts also get to go on trips and days out, to places like the zoo, theme parks or a farm. Sometimes you will be able to go camping with the rest of the Pack. This will mean you sleeping in a tent and doing loads of outdoor activities. There are over 100,000 Cubs in the UK.

Who can join?
All boys and girls aged between 8 and 101/2 years old. Under some circumstances, Cub Scouts can join the Pack as young as 71/2 if, for example, they have friends joining at the same time, or are mature enough to move on early from Beavers, (and there is space in our Pack). Such decisions are taken by the Cub and Beaver Scout leaders. Tell me more... Cubs is the second section of the Scouting movement and originally started in 1916 for younger brothers who wanted a 'look-in' to Scouting. In nearly a century, the section has constantly evolved and adapted its programme and methods to meet the changing needs of each generation of young people, and these days admits girls as well as boys. Structure and Organisation A Pack of Cub Scouts is organised into Sixes, with each Six named after a colour, and a Sixer and a Seconder in charge. When a Cub reaches the age of 101/2 they have the opportunity to move on to Scouts. Click on the image below to find out more about Scouts. Moving-on-Award (Cub Pack to Scout Troop)

The Grand Howl - Pack, Pack, Pack...
The Grand Howl is a special way of saying 'hello' to Akela and a way of reminding you about your Cub Scout Promise. Only Cubs that have been invested as a Cub Scout are able to join in the Grand Howl.
The Grand Howl starts when Akela calls out: "Pack, Pack, Pack!" Akela will then raise arms outwards and then lower to their side. At that point the whole Pack forma circle and squat down (not sitting) like a wolf would with their 'paws' in between their legs. The whole Pack then calls out (very loudly!): "Akela...we will do our best!" The Cubs then stand up smartly at alert...the Duty Sixer (or whoever is chosen to do the Grand Howl) then salutes Akela and calls out: "Cubs! Do your best!" The rest of the Cubs then salute and call back: "We WILL do our best!" The chosen Sixer will then raise the flag and salute. The Pack will then salute the flag. This is the Grand Howl. It is performed as an opening and closing ceremony to the Pack night, usually in conjunction with a Flag ceremony. |
