1st Topcliffe Scout Troop
An Introduction to Scouts
Scouts are the third section of the Scouting Association and was founded by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907. From the foundations of Scouting to the first experimental camp for 20 boys in 1907, the movement now has an estimated 28 million members worldwide, and in the UK alone there are over 520,000 boys and girls involved in Scouting.
The Scout Section is for young people, boys and girls usually aged between 10½ and 14 years. A young person can come into the Troop at 10 and may stay until they are 14½ years old.
At 1st Topcliffe Scouts, we think that young people should be able to take advantage of the following opportunities that Scouting has to offer:
- Trying new activities
- Making new friends
- Get outdoors
- Learn exciting things
- Have fun!

Who can join?
All boys and girls aged between 101/2 and 14 years old. If you want a taste of adventure, if you are keen to learn some new skills in the great outdoors and make some new friends in the process then Scouts is right for you. Contact us today. Tell me more... At our weekly meetings we play games, learn Scout skills and work towards Activity Badges. Plus their is the chance to earn the Chief Scout Gold Award. Scouts offer a wider and more varied range of outdoor activities than Beavers and Cubs such as hiking, canoeing, rafting, climbing and various types of camping and cooking. As well as outdoor activities Scouts have a balanced programme which allows them to work towards gaining Challenge and Activity Badges, developing good habits of health and personal safety. Indoors, they can also learn skills such as the knife & axe and knots. Scouts can also develop key skills such as confidence, creativity, friendships, communications and the ability to explore their local community and the wide world in which they live and making new friends. When a Scout reaches the age of 14 they have the opportunity to move on to Explorer Scouts or become a Young Leader to our Troop. |

Structure and Organisation
1st Topcliffe Troop is divided into small groups called Patrols, each headed up by an older Scout called a Patrol Leader, and often with an Assistant Patrol Leader.
Scouting is about being with friends, as part of a team, and participating fully in the adventure and opportunities of life. Flag Break At each meeting or camp, the Troop takes part in the traditional Union Jack flag break. The duty Patrol Leader raises and salutes the flag as a sign of respect. All the invested members of the Troop then salute. At the end of the meeting, the same Patrol Leader will lower the flag and the Assistant Patrol Leader says a prayer. Scout Investiture The Investiture, or joining ceremony, is one of the most important events in a Scout's life and should be treated with respect. The recruit will make their Scout Promise & Law by learning and committing to this as part of the Troop ceremony. |
