Scouting's TV debut

In July 2012, the Discovery Channel premiered Scouting’s first ever national TV advert which promoted our Associations' need for more volunteers in Scouting. The advert also aired on Discovery’s Animal Planet TV channel.

Make a difference

The 30-second advert was created as part of the Scout Associations partnership with Discovery and highlights how adults can make a difference to young people’s lives by volunteering.

Discovery Channel

Discovery is one of the best known TV brands in the world. Every day, over 3.7 million people enjoy watching one of Discovery's channels. Its programmes tell the stories of pioneers and adventurers and cover subjects such as science and exploration.

As well as great stories and characters, Discovery's programmes try to tell you something about the world around you. Its list of inspirational presenters includes Bear Grylls, Stephen Hawking, and Olympic Gold medalist James Cracknell.

With a mutual love of the outdoors, both Discovery and the Scout Association believe that they can challenge people through adventure and exploring the world around them. Our partnership started through the Scout Pioneer Activity Badge, which is sponsored by Discovery and aims to inspire young people to learn by doing.

Welcome to SCOUTS TV, a new 'online channel' launched by the Scout Association in association with YouTube. Have a look at the selection of Scouting videos below.

Bear's not giving the two fingers...honest! Just his 3 words to describe Scouting.

Topcliffe Co-S.L (Dave) features in this video taken from Windsor Castle in April 2013. Watch out for Dave in the plain yellow necker!

Everyday Adventure - Episodes 1 to 6

TV panelist and editor of 'Private Eye' Ian Hislop gives you an insight into Scouting for Boys.
You'll have a better idea of Scouting and what we do after watching this.

Each year, the Association holds Scout Community Week. Throughout the year, Topcliffe Scouts do their bit for the community.

Ian Hislop continues his look at Scouting for Boys. Watch the remaining 4 episodes here.

Ten years of success in Scouting. A lot has happened in that time. Why not join the adventure and be a part of the next 10 years of Scouting in the UK?

Looking forward to Scouting's Vision in the coming years up to 2018. Get set for the ride!

Scouting Bushcraft

This is a key part of Scouts that makes Scouts what it is. The sense of adventure, the survival instinct and being active in the outdoors. Want to learn how to make fire or build a shelter (bivouac)? Then check out these videos below.

Important note to all young people:

All the videos below are all demonstrated by experts who are not connected to Topcliffe Scouts.

You should only give these bushcraft skills a go and try to learn the skills under the supervision of a responsible adult such as your parents or carers.

Watching these videos with parents first is recommended then you might be able to practice together ready for Scouts. When you are out camping only with the Scouts, these sorts of skills are great to know & are fun skills to be able to learn. But remember, safety come first.

ALWAYS have the correct tools;
ALWAYS have some form of first aid nearby, just in case!
ALWAYS have an adult helping you (never try these skills on your own)

ALWAYS CONCENTRATE & TAKE YOUR TIME TO LEARN PROPERLY & PRACTICE YOUR NEW SKILLS (WITH AN ADULT HELPING).

REMEMBER, NOT ALL SCOUT TROOPS INCLUDE THESE KIND OF SKILLS IN THEIR PROGRAMS, BUT MOST DO.

We teach, demonstrate & supervise these types of skills at our Scout meetings as well so if you don’t feel confident in practicing, then you will get the chance to practice these skills at some point at Scouts.
